Researching Your Company

Good research is critical in making good company selections. Study each company and determine if they fit your criteria. If they do, then bookmark them with your Favorites button and hold them for further study later.

Exercise 5.1

10 Target-Specific Industries
Identify at least 10 target-specific industries and establish criteria for your next job.

Any future research will be centered on industry sub-sectors you have already researched. Once you’ve identified these 10 industry sectors and sub-sectors, look carefully at the specific NAICS. Now, research companies falling within that broad NAICS code category.

One secret lies in determining a company’s NAICS code. This stands for North American Industry Clissification System. Every industry and every company in the United States falls into one or more of these NAICS codes. The “world” of these codes may be found online at:
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart=2007.

The initial list begins with the overall two-digit number listing in which all industries are divided. If you click on one of the two-number sections, you will see a further breakdown of the components of that section and, depending upon the classification, it may break down into other sub-industry sections for even more classification refinement. Once you have identified the specific industry you wish to target, then use the logic strings online (found in Chapter 6) to investigate and discover the companies found that possess that specific NAICS code.
