Good research is critical in making good company
selections. Study each company and determine if they fit your
criteria. If they do, then bookmark them with your "favorites"
button and hold them for further study later.
One secret lies in determining a company's
SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) code. Our list is
broken down by major sector SIC Code. The workbook example
will show all major SIC codes broken down by the first two
digits of the industrialization classification, which will
allow you to review many industries by SIC Code. Look this
list over and select at least 10 you would like to explore.
Then, go to your local library and look up the sub-sectors
within that industry. For example, you may want to work in
the apparel industry. Fine! But do you mean women, men,
manufacturing, distribution or retail? Specificity counts!
You get the picture. BE SPECIFIC. Otherwise, you are wasting
precious time.

Exercise 5.1
12 Target-Specific Industries
|
Identify at least 12 target-specific industries and
establish criteria for your next job.
|
If you don't want to spend hours of drudgery
in the library doing eye-straining research on recruiters or
companies, check our website, www.resumeresults.net, and look
at the link for target selection. We can save you hundreds of
hours of research time. Spend your time interviewing, not
playing secretary or research assistant.
Any future research will be centered on
industry sub-sectors you have already researched. Once you've
identified these 10 industry sectors and sub-sectors, look
carefully at the specific SIC code for each. Now, research
companies falling within that broad SIC code category.
On my web site www.fecent.com,
you will find appropriate research sites.
